Book Review - The Coming Wave
Yesterday I finished “The Coming Wave” by Mustafa Suleyman.
I should’ve read it when I first bought it, about 8 months ago, it would’ve helped me appreciate the speed of the coming wave even more. For most people working in tech, these are familiar concepts and ideas, yet he lays them out in such a logical way and wraps them with extra nuanced details that it makes it both enjoyable and informative to read. Some sections you can’t put it down chapter after chapter, while others make you pause every few pages.
One section really stood out to me, describing the scale of human invention:
“Our ability to manipulate atoms with precision enabled the invention of silicon wafers, which enabled the computation of trillions of operations per second, which in turn enabled us to decipher the code of life.”
DNA sequencing that is, and then:
“Foundational breakthroughs in synthetic biology have enabled us to sequence, modify, and now print DNA”.
😳
He draws out on important considerations we all need to make, from developers, to politicians, to every individual to make sure “we” do a better job at going through the wave as a society, compared to the previous industrial revolutions.
Agree with Daniel Kahneman - “Essential reading”.
